Salihotra Maharishi who had his hermitage in this place. He used to grind rice for a living and offered half of the flour to the seekers and used to consume the rest himself. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. To test his devotion, the Lord appeared as a guest to him one day. He requested Salihotra Maharishi to offer him food, which the sage did. The guest felt hungry and requested the sage to offer more food. The sage offered the other half portion of the flour which he used to consume himself. The guest asked a place to rest(Evvul) and the sage readily offered his hermitage. On arriving at the hermitage, the guest revealed His true form and blessed the sage.

*** This kshethram has a few specialties. It is said that if one bathes in the Hruthapanashini Pushkarani on Thai Ammavasi, all of their ailments will be cured. Another belief that has seen fruit here is when a person takes a handful of jaggery and dissolves it here in the water on any Ammavasi, all their wishes come true.

When Lord Shiva had Brahmahatyadosham for killing Daksha Prajapati, it is said that after He bathed in this pushkarani all his sins were absolved.

Another story tells the story of the Lord's marriage to Vasumathi Thayaar. It is said that Thayaar belonged to a village called Dharmasenapuram which was close to Tiruvallur. Vasumathi Thayaar was the daughter of the king of Dharmasenapuram. She wanted to get married to the Lord. Her father agreed but he had a condition that his Son-in-law should not leave his kingdom and take his daughter with Him. The Lord agreed to this condition and promised the king that He would never leave Tiruvallur.
