According to the legend, Pundareeka Maharshi who was desirous of worshipping Lord Vishnu with lotus flowers proceeded eastward and was trying to drain the waters of the ocean to make his way. The Lord came in the guise of an old man and asked for some food. The Maharishi went to fetch him some food, and when he returned he found Lord Vishnu adorning Himself with the flowers and giving darshan as Ananthasayanam. Hence this place gained the name Sthalasayanam.

*** A peculiarity of this kshethram is that one can see the Lord in reclining posture without Adiseshan. The Lord is reclining on the ground hence he got the name Sthalashayana Perumal ( Sthala meaning ground ). The Lord can be seen with 4 hands. His left-hand showcases the  welcoming his devotees and His right-hand can be seen showcasing the along the left and right lengths of His bed.
