Azhwar Pashuram:Namazhwar : 11 PashuramsSthala Puranam:According to legend, Durvasa Maharishi is said to have once visited  and Bhoodevi did not pay attention to his arrival and did not perform the required  thus, Durvasa Maharishi is said to have cursed Bhoodevi that she would become like Sridevi. When the Lord takes His avatarams, He stands, sits, lies down and does all of His activities on Bhoodevi whereas, He has allocated a small position in His heart for Sridevi. Upon hearing this curse, Bhoodevi pleads with the Maharishi to forgive her. Durvasa Maharishi tells Bhoodevi that once a curse is delivered, it cannot be taken back but she could attain atonement if she performed  at Tirupperai. Thus Bhoodevi is said to come to this kshethram and performed by chanting the . One day when Bhoodevi went to bathe in the Tamaraparani River before offering her daily penance, She is said to have found a pair of ( earrings ) in the shape of ( a type of fish ). She is said to have presented this  to the Lord thus relieving Herself from the curse and giving Him the name .*** An importance of this kshethram is Varuna Japam. It is said that if one performs Varuna Japam at this kshethram, it will bring rain as desired. It is said that Varuna had sought the help of Perumal to help him in his time of need.
